I have been helped by so many amazing people to get Maple & Fitz to where it is today. The advice and support I have had from my mentors is invaluable so when I was asked to be a part of the Mentor MatcHER campaign, supported by the UK Minister for Women and Equalities, I couldn’t have been more excited. Mariam, the campaign’s incredibly amazing and inspiring Founder said that they were looking for the “most successful power players and brightest business gurus” and I immediately thought there must be far more accomplished women they should be talking to!
As I talked to Mariam, however, about the themes of the campaign it made me realise how closely Mentor MatcHER aligned with my own journey. We talked about taking risks and trying to do things we had never done before, putting yourself in totally uncomfortable situations, jumping without a safety net and working harder than you have ever worked before to make sure you stayed afloat. Her own journey had given her a purpose and passion to help empower women from underprivileged backgrounds and as a mentor, I would help these women build their future.
When I started building Maple & Fitz, I was looking for the best people I could find and it just so happens that I have two incredibly talented but very different women helping me drive our vision forward. Jodi, our Head Chef, is the most organised person I know. She keeps the trains running on time and makes everything seem so effortless – I would be lost without her. Steph takes care of all of our sales and marketing and has this incredible ability to anticipate what Maple & Fitz and its customers need before anyone else has figured it out!
The MatcHER program launched this month at the Conde Nast College of Fashion & Design during International Women’s Month. I enjoyed speaking about my experience, but I really loved hearing other women speak about their journeys (I’m not afraid to admit this, but I definitely shed more than a few tears). I know that I still have a long way to go and many more challenges to overcome, but I will continue to look for support from my amazing team, Rox, Jodi & Steph.
We often get caught up in our own day-to-day business but Women’s Month reminds us to let other women inspire us, help us and empower us and as strong as we are, we’ll always be stronger together.
